Description

This is a day's hike to one of the most beautiful places in Ushuaia, in a journey of discovery far from the beaten paths.

After a short bus transfer to the Tierra Mayor Valley, we will start trekking to see the wonderful color of a glacial lake before reaching a summit with a privileged view. The walk begins with a demanding slope. After an hour's walk, the forest is behind, the slope is not as steep, and we begin to enjoy incredible views from the top.

After we reached 500 meters, the valley moderates its steepness as we reach the tiny Turquoise Lagoon that, after a snowy winter may still be frozen at the beginning of October. After admiring the curious color of the turquoise lagoon, we will continue our hike gaining altitude along a rocky ridge, so as to reach the summit of Mount Carbajal, from where we can see the namesake valley from an ideal vantage point. From perspective, it is easy to see the traces left behind some 10,000 years ago, when the glaciers made it towards the Beagle Channel, during the last glaciation that shaped this unique landscape.

"My wife and I hiked to the Turquoise Lagoon, then to the top of Carbajal Mountain. This was a great hike, through the forest, then through the peat bog, then finally the snow fields at the top of Carbajal Mountain. For the adventurous, there was plenty of exposure on the last part of the hike before the summit (perhaps too much for my wife!). Our guide, Ignacio, was great! One of our favorite hikes from our time in Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia. "

"If you visit Ushuaia, I highly recommend booking your outdoor activities with Canal Fun. The treks were amazing (Turquoise Lagoon/Cerro Cabrajal, and Glaciar Vinciguerra), and the visit to Harberton Ranch & Gable Island is highly recommended (not just the penguins! amazing sea birds, interesting hike across multiple ecosystems, and a very fun lunch grilled by your guides!)."
