Winter: May to September

· · · · ·

We venture into a true winter expedition toward the majestic Vinciguerra Glacier, exploring some of Ushuaia’s most breathtaking snow-covered landscapes. Along the way, we cross frozen peat bogs, rivers hidden beneath the ice, and a fully snow-covered forest that transforms Tierra del Fuego into a white and silent scenery. Equipped for mountain conditions, we advance over snow and ice until reaching the frozen glacial lagoon and, finally, the impressive glacier front. There, we share a hot lunch surrounded by ancient ice formations, in an intense, exclusive, and truly unforgettable experience.

We begin the day with hotel pick-up and head toward the starting point on the outskirts of Ushuaia, where our winter journey begins. We start the trek crossing frozen peat bogs and snow-covered forest sections.

We walk across constantly changing terrain, where roots, frozen mud, and fallen logs add dynamism to the route. As we gain elevation, the landscape becomes more open and challenging. We equip ourselves with crampons to move safely over snow and ice, crossing frozen sections that enhance the expedition feel.

We reach the Vinciguerra Glacier lagoon, completely frozen in winter, and cross it to arrive at the imposing glacier front. Here, we discover unique ice formations, crevasses, and striking colors that reveal the power of nature.

We enjoy lunch in this exceptional setting, accompanied by a hot drink while taking in one of the most impressive landscapes in Tierra del Fuego.

We begin the descent, once again crossing the snowy valley until returning to the starting point, bringing to a close an intense and memorable day.

The climate in Tierra del Fuego is famously unpredictable; it is possible to experience sun, rain, and wind all in a single day. The rains are rarely torrential. In summer, average temperatures are around 10°C (with variations between 5°C and 15°C), while in winter they are usually close to 0°C. The key to enjoying your trip is to be well-prepared.

Essential Clothing: The "Onion" Method
To ensure comfort during outdoor activities, dressing in layers is crucial. The "onion" system allows you to adapt your clothes to changing weather conditions and your level of physical activity.

Layers: Wear several thin garments that can be easily put on or taken off to regulate your body temperature in response to wind or sun.
Footwear: This is the highest priority. It is vital to have waterproof footwear that offers robust protection, ideal for walking on wet, muddy, or snowy terrain.
Jacket: Indispensable. A waterproof or water-resistant jacket will effectively protect you from rain and wind.

Recommended Clothing:

  • Thermal undergarments (shirt and leggings for those who are particularly sensitive to the cold).
  • Comfortable long pants for trekking.
  • Waterproof trekking boots for walking on mountainous terrain.
  • A fleece or microfleece jacket/sweatshirt.
  • A rain/windproof jacket. Ideal: Gore-tex or softshell.
